Harthamah narrates:

On one occasion, I came to Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) and informed him that Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen, Haroon Rasheed, had conveyed salaams to him. I also informed him that Haroon Rasheed had given the instruction that he should be given five thousand dinaars (gold coins) as a gift.

It is further reported that after Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) received the money, he called for a barber and requested him to cut his hair. After the barber cut his hair, Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) gave him fifty dinaars from the five thousand dinaars. Thereafter, Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) took strips of cloth and tied them into small bags which he filled with gold coins. He continued to distribute these bags among the Quraish of Makkah Mukarramah until he returned home with less than one hundred gold coins remaining for himself from the five thousand.
