Haafiz Abul Waleed Al Baaji (rahimahullah) has mentioned that when Mansoor performed Haj, he offered to seek revenge for Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) from Ja’far bin Sulaimaan. However, Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) refused and said, “May Allah forbid (that revenge be taken from him for what he had done to me)!”

Abu Dawood (rahimahullah) mentions:

Ja’far bin Sulaimaan ‘Abbaasi had beaten Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) on account of his ruling in regard to the divorce of a man who is compelled being invalid. One of the students of ibn Wahb (rahimahullah) has narrated to me from ibn Wahb (rahimahullah) that Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) was beaten and his head was shaved. He was then paraded (through the streets of Madinah Munawwarah) on a camel and instructed to make an announcement against himself (of retraction). (Instead of retracting,) Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) announced, “Behold! Those who recognize me know who I am, and for those who do not know me, I am Maalik bin Anas. It is my view that the divorce issued by a person who is compelled is invalid.” When Ja’far saw the steadfastness of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) and realized that he was actually declaring his view instead of retracting, he hastily issued the instruction for his men to go to Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) and dismount him from the camel (so that he would cease his announcement).

On account of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) enduring the punishment and beating of Ja’far for the sake of Islam, Imaam Laith (rahimahullah) had said, “I hope that Allah Ta‘ala will raise Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) by one stage in Jannah for every lash that he was meted.”
