Khalaf bin ‘Umar (rahimahullah) narrates:

I was once with Imaam Maalik bin Anas (rahimahullah) when ibn Abi Katheer (rahimahullah), the Qari of the people of Madinah Munawwarah, approached him and handed a piece of paper to him. On receiving the piece of paper, Imaam Maalim (rahimahullah) glanced at it and thereafter placed it beneath the musallah. When ibn Abi Katheer (rahimahullah) stood to leave, I also began to stand, but Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) said to me, “O Khalaf! Sit, and hand me the piece of paper.”

On taking the paper, I saw the following written within it:

I had a dream, during the night, in which it seemed as if I was being told, “This is Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in the Musjid.” I thus proceeded to the Musjid where I found that the corner of the blessed grave of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had opened, and Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was seated, while the people around him were requesting, “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! Advise us!” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “I have buried a treasure beneath the Mimbar, and I instructed Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) to distribute it among the people, so go to Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah).” Hearing this, the people began to disperse. As they left, one of them asked the others, “What do you think Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) will do?” He replied, “Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) will fulfill the instruction of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).”

On learning of this blessed dream, Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) became extremely affected and began to weep. When I thereafter departed, I left him in the very same condition of weeping.”

Note: ‘Treasure’ referred to the Mubaarak Ahaadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and the knowledge of Deen.
