Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “My entire ummah will enter Jannah, except for those who refuse.” The Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) asked, “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! Who are the people who refuse?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “Those who obey me (i.e. accept my deen) will enter Jannah, and those who disobey me have refused.”

Note:

In this Hadith, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) has explained that salvation in the Hereafter is only for those who obey Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Obeying Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) can refer to accepting him as the Messenger of Allah and following his deen. Hence, the statement, “Those who obey me” refers to believers, and the statement, “Those who disobey me” refers to disbelievers.

This Hadith can also be in relation to only the believers. The point made is that only those believers who obey Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and adhere to his blessed sunnah in all facets of life will gain entry into Jannah at the first occasion.

As for those believers who disobey Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and abandon his sunnah, thereby committing sins and evils in their lives, they will first have to enter Jahannum to gain purification before entering Jannah.
