Hazrat Haarith bin Suwaid (rahimahullah) reports that once, Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) narrated two Ahaadith. One Hadith was the Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), while the other was his own statement. Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said, “Indeed a believer views his sins as though he is seated beneath a mountain and he fears that it can fall on him at any moment, and indeed a sinful person (not concerned about his deen) views his sins as though it is a fly which passes by his nose (i.e. he considers it to be trivial and insignificant). He thus casually swats at it with his hand.” While narrating this Hadith, one of the narrators, Abu Shihaab (rahimahullah), explained the gesture of Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) by him waving his hand above his nose.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) thereafter reported the Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) saying, “Most certainly, the pleasure of Allah Ta‘ala when His servant repents to Him is even more than (the pleasure of) the person who halted during a journey in a place where survival is difficult, and he has his conveyance carrying his food and drink. Thereafter, he places his head down and sleeps for a short while, but on awakening, he finds that his conveyance has wandered off. (He then sets out in search of his conveyance, until) eventually, when the heat, thirst and other difficulties become too difficult for him to bear, he says, ‘Let me return to my initial place (where I lost the animal).’ He then returns to that place and falls asleep for a short time. Thereafter, on awakening, he finds that his animal (has returned and) is with him (i.e. the happiness of Allah Ta‘ala when the servants repents is even more than the happiness of this person when he recovers his lost animal).”
